A strong health system is the foundation of quality healthcare. At MDH, we work alongside the Government of Tanzania and development partners to build resilient, efficient, and people-centred health systems that ensure every Tanzanian has access to quality health services.
Through close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the President's Office Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), Regional and Council Health Management Teams (R/CHMTs), healthcare facilities, academic institutions, and development partners, MDH supports national efforts to strengthen the six core building blocks of the health system. Our interventions are designed to improve service delivery, enhance system resilience, and ensure sustainable health outcomes.
Our Areas of Focus
Leadership and Governance
MDH strengthens leadership and management capacity at national, regional, council, and facility levels to improve planning, coordination, accountability, and evidence based decision making. We support the development and implementation of policies, strategies, guidelines, and governance systems that promote efficient and responsive health services.
Health Workforce Development
A skilled and motivated workforce is essential for quality healthcare. MDH invests in continuous professional development through competency-based training, mentorship, supportive supervision, coaching, and capacity building for healthcare workers, managers, and community health providers across multiple health programs.
Quality Improvement
We support healthcare facilities to institutionalize quality improvement approaches that enhance patient safety, strengthen clinical performance, and improve service delivery. Through quality improvement collaboratives, performance monitoring, and continuous learning, MDH helps facilities achieve higher standards of care.
Health Information Systems and Digital Health
Reliable data drive better decisions. MDH strengthens health information systems by improving data collection, quality assurance, analysis, reporting, and utilization. We support digital health innovations, electronic medical records, interoperability, and the use of data for planning, resource allocation, and continuous quality improvement.
Laboratory Systems Strengthening
MDH enhances laboratory capacity through infrastructure development, equipment support, quality management systems, biosafety and biosecurity, workforce training, and accreditation initiatives. These efforts improve diagnostic accuracy, disease surveillance, and timely clinical decision-making.
Supply Chain and Commodity Management
To ensure uninterrupted access to essential medicines, diagnostics, and medical supplies, MDH strengthens procurement planning, inventory management, logistics systems, forecasting, distribution, and commodity accountability across supported health facilities.
Emergency Preparedness and Health Security
MDH supports Tanzania's capacity to prepare for, detect, and respond to public health emergencies through surveillance strengthening, outbreak preparedness, workforce development, infection prevention and control, and rapid response systems that protect communities from emerging health threats.
Research, Innovation, and Evidence Generation
Innovation and evidence are central to sustainable health improvements. MDH collaborates with research institutions, government agencies, and global partners to generate evidence, evaluate health interventions, implement innovative solutions, and translate research into policies and practice.
Our Impact
By strengthening systems rather than delivering isolated interventions, MDH contributes to a more resilient health sector capable of providing equitable, high quality, and sustainable healthcare services. Our integrated approach improves health outcomes, enhances system performance, empowers healthcare workers, and supports Tanzania's journey toward Universal Health Coverage and long-term health security.
Together with our partners, MDH is building stronger health systems that improve lives today while creating a healthier future for generations to come.
